Turquoise and Spiny Oyster Composite Pendant
Turquoise and Spiny Oyster Shell!
This pendant features a composite of natural turquoise and spiny oyster shell, bringing together two materials formed through very different geological and biological processes. Turquoise is a hydrous copper aluminum phosphate that forms when copper-rich fluids interact with aluminum-bearing host rock, often in arid environments, creating its characteristic blue and green tones. (We all love turquoise!!)
Spiny oyster shell, sourced from the marine mollusk Spondylus, contributes vibrant orange, red, and purple coloration derived from natural pigments within the shell.
In composite form, small pieces of turquoise and spiny oyster are carefully arranged, stabilized, and bonded to create a single, durable material. This creates a brick we buy when we are at the gem and mineral show in Tucson!
