The story began approximately 20 million years ago. A forest stood, tall and stately, on the steep slopes of Mt Tjikolak in West Java, Indonesia. Proud and strong, and seemingly untouchable. One day, the ground started to rumble. The earth became hot and gray plumes of smoke billowed in the sky. A mighty volcanic explosion ravaged the earth around it, covering the forest in ash so thick the trees felt suffocated and died. Years went by, but the lack of oxygen slowed the decay of the trees. Minerals filled in gapes, opaline silica preserving the mighty wood. And so the forest survived, a fossil to tell its tale. Then the waters came. Waters rich in copper, iron, and manganese. Years would pass until this ancient wood would return to tell its tale. Opalized, mineralized, and fossilized, the people of Indonesia would only find pebbles at first, but eventually the mighty trees, brownish gray and dull, were opened and the coppery, blue and green gem quality depths revealed
